Lusitano Ginásio Clube is a 108-year-old Portuguese football club that makes history with its new owner, Nneka Ede, who was born in Nigeria and is the first African woman to own a European team. The club plays in the Portuguese third division, Campeonato de Portugal.
At the announcement of the purchase, Ede spoke of Nigeria ‘s longstanding partnership with Portuguese soccer, saying that she was “overwhelmingly pleased” at the new chapter in the club partnership and that she wanted the club to provide a “pathway for young talent to grow and shine.”
In a statement, the club said the contract was signed following months of talks with extreme sports enthusiast, Ede.
Ede is the second Nigerian to own a Portuguese club following the purchase of Clube Desportivo Feirense by businessman Kunle Soname in 2015
