StarNews Mobile, an Ivory Coast-based on-demand video (VoD) startup that helps link users to their favorite celebrities, passed the five million subscriber mark after just over two years of service.
StarNews Mobile launched in July 2017 aims at the mass market with a network of more than 50 mobile channels offering celebrity-based content available at low regular subscription rates.
Users will subscribe to the channel of their favorite celebrities for as little as US$ 0.10 per day via their operator. When registered, they receive a video connection via SMS for regular viewing of exclusive videos.
The revenue generated from the subscription fee will then be shared among the operator, the content provider and StarNews Mobile.
In collaboration with operators MTN and Moov, the company was deployed in Ivory Coast and hit the one million subscriber mark back in April 2018. It has since released in Cameroon, the Republic of Congo and South Africa with a Nigeria release coming soon.
Now the startup, which took part in the L’Afrique Excelle accelerator at the World Bank last year, has announced that it has passed the five million subscriber mark. Its user base is rising by 23 per cent per quarter and over the same time revenues are increasing by 10 per cent.
“We are deeply humbled that StarNews resonates with millions of satisfied customers in Africa, and believe this bodes well later this year for our continued expansion across Anglophone Africa,” said founder Guy Kamgaing.
Apart from Nigeria, StarNew through its MTN alliance targets 20 additional markets in total.
